Surgery Results August 29,2000

It was successful!  I went to Children's Hospital at 9:00 in the morning for admission. Actual surgery was scheduled to start around 11, but unfortunately the hospital lost my paperwork and surgery didn't get started until 1:30. The surgery lasted about 2 hours. The operation is called a Nissen fundoplication. With this operation, the top part of my stomach (the fundus) is wrapped around the bottom of my esophagus to create a collar. After the operation, every time the stomach contracts, the collar around the esophagus contracts preventing reflux. This procedure should end my long time problem with acid reflux. The Doctor also implanted a G-tube feeding tube into my stomach. I need this immediately after surgery to get nutrients into my stomach. After a couple of days or so of heeling I should be able to start eating my normal meal of pureed foods. My feeding tube will only be used for supplemental feeding. My Doctor wants me to gain a lot of weight. That sounds like a lot fun! All the good stuff is fattening. If I do real good the G-tube might be removed in a year or two.

The Recovery

Wednesday: The day after surgery was a really bad day. I was loaded with morphine and had no idea what world I was in. When I was conscious I was really scared. I had this lousy tube in my nose and my throat hurt like hell from the tube they put in during surgery. Mommy was there to comfort me though. Both Grandmoms and Ryan were there to comfort mommy.  Overnight got a little better. Daddy stayed with me every night so I felt secure.

Thursday: Things started to improve. They took that tube out of my nose, stopped drugging me and started to give me some real liquid. The day nurse forgot to plug my feeding tube, so when mommy gave me some juice, it just went right out the tube onto the floor. Dumb nurse.  Anyhow, they fixed that and I was able to keep the juice in me. Without the morphine I was happier. I started smiling and kicking my feet like I always do. Dinner was going to be a real adventure. I had not swallowed any food as of yet. My throat was pretty sore but mommy managed to convince me to eat. I had some cereal mixed with milk. Mommy put me in my wheelchair and I took her for a walk around the hospital. I could only push with one hand ‘cause I still I still have the IV in the other.

Friday:  Daddy had to leave for work early today so he wheeled me to the nurses’ station. That was fun. I could hang out and flirt with the nurses until Mommy arrived. I had a couple of teaspoons of cereal for breakfast and some milk. It’s hard to drink from a cup right now, so mommy is letting me drink from a bottle until I heal some more. Don’t worry; I’ll be back on the cup when I feel better. The rest of my food gets pumped into my feeding tube. They removed the IV from my arm so I’m free to roam.  Mommy and I are going to go to the cafeteria for lunch today. I’m going to watch Barney , Sesame street and Arthur this afternoon. Grandmom Ruby is staying home today with Ryan. He needs some rest.

Mommy is going to a special class Saturday to learn how to care for my feeding tube. It seems like an involved process. The doctor wants me to have three cans of Pediasure pumped into me everyday in between meals. They said this would add weight to me in a hurry. They want me to become a real ball buster for mommy to lift.

Saturday: Finally I'm getting out of here. It's about 5:00 in the afternoon and the doctors said it's ok to leave. I seem to be healing up nicely. I'll make better progress at home anyhow. We can all sleep in our own beds tonight! Hurray! I should be home by 6:30 today in case anyone wants to call. Thanks for all your prayers. They worked.
Love
Josh

Update Sunday September 10, 2000:

I am healing slowly from my surgery but my throat is still sore. It was sore before surgery from my acid reflux problem and the Doctor said it would be a month before it feels better. Mommy is giving me Pediasure 3 times a day. I started drinking from a cup again. I drink as much as I can tolerate and the rest is pumped into my feeding tube. It's a slow process. An 8 oz can of Pediasure may take up to one and a half hours to drink when pumped through my feeding tube. I'm back to being mobile on the floor again and can get around fairly well all things considered.

My cousins Hailey and Madelyn came in from Canada this weekend to visit. We had five people sleeping over. Boy was it crowded. It was fun seeing everybody. Mommy and I will miss Grandmom Ruby when she leaves to go home today.

Monday I am going back to LARC School for the first time since my surgery August 29th. I love the bus ride and look forward to learning how to do new things. I will be in a new grade this year. The teachers are really nice at the school and have a lot of patience working with me. Bye-bye for now…

Love Joshua
